December 2011 - “Harmsen Gives Back to the Community and Environment”
Several years ago Harmsen and Associates, Inc. had the opportunity to be a part of an ambitious project with the Adopt A Stream Foundation and their Trout Stream Exhibit. The project included the massive restoration of a 20 acre site in McCollum Park in Snohomish County.
In the 1970’s this 20 acre site consisted of two salmon streams, wetland systems and an old second growth forest, but was filled and made into a parking lot. The restoration of the site began in 1993 with the removal of hundreds of dump truck loads of fill dirt and rocks.
Today, the project is 95% complete and consists of a visitors’ building, wetland ponds, a trout stream exhibit, and interpretive trails. On October 29th Harmsen was honored at an open house event held for the 47 contributors providing over $1,500,000 worth of donated equipment, materials and labor - Harmsen donated 17 total hours of surveying services for the project.
The Adopt A Stream Foundation hopes to raise additional funds to complete an elevated nature walkway and a forest canopy viewing tower. Once these are installed, the exhibit will be open to the public. The goal of the exhibit is to educate the public on ways to work together on protecting our streams and wetlands. For more information about Adopt A Stream or the Trout Exhibit you can contact Tom Murdock at 425-316-8592.

5/25/2011 - North Snohomish County Community Partners Economic Development Summit
Recently H&AI’s project engineer Scott Peterson attended the North Snohomish County Community Partners Economic Development Summit. The event was held in one of the meeting rooms at the astounding Tulalip Resort near Marysville, and after a ceremonial welcoming event by tribal members the summit began in earnest.
Scott felt there were two discussion topics at the meeting: How do the local governments work cooperatively to create an effective interconnected infrastructure, and how does this region draw businesses (and subsequently more jobs).
In terms of infrastructure, the cities of Marysville, Arlington and Quilceda Village (a tribal “federal” city) are working closely with each other and the Washington State Department of Transportation to plan key connection points along I-5, to identify principal road arterials that will convey traffic efficiently, not only within the city, but between neighboring cities as well. It takes cooperation and an understanding of each other’s needs when creating a collective comprehensive plan in this region.
Each jurisdiction presented their philosophy, their ideal growth pattern within their city limits, and what incentives currently, or will, exist to entice businesses into locating within the region. For instance, the City of Arlington will be promoting the large land area south of the municipal airport, with the advantages of a major freeway nearby, a large municipal airport with growth potential, and an active railroad line offering convenient transportation of goods and services into and out of the region. The City of Marysville is also promoting this area, along with a long term goal of revitalizing the downtown area to draw in different businesses and more residential options. They are in the process of developing an environmental assessment of this downtown area, which means that businesses seeking permit in this area will receive umbrella coverage if you will, thus significantly improving the permit experience. Additionally, Marysville has plans for regional stormwater detention facilities, something that developers will greatly appreciate since the potential for construction cost savings is huge.
Overall, it’s great to see local government working hard to draw more businesses into the region. Not only will it create more job growth, but the potential is there to lessen the commute time for people in north Snohomish County and Skagit County who might find a great job just a short distance from home.

3/21/2011 – Eve Riley Steps Away From H&AI

Thursday March 17th, 2011 marked Eve Riley’s last day at Harmsen & Associates, Inc. as she regretfully left for a new career opportunity. For over 6 years, Eve performed a variety of responsibilities at H&AI (she was even qualified to serve as a survey crew member). Eve was our estimator and managed the front desk/reception. She had become an integral part of our team and will truly be missed by all.
Eve was noted for her customer relations. Many of our clients have commented on how well she had managed their projects and kept them informed of details; from the estimate to the completion date. She never missed a beat and did all of her work diligently and with a smile on her face.
We are all very happy for Eve and wish her well in her new job. Eve’s new employer will be GeoDimensions, a surveying firm in Bellevue, WA. We look forward to a continued relationship with Eve and to be a professional referral for her. If you have any questions, please contact Britt Heath at 360-794-7811.
